To the world, Martin Luther King Jr. is a voice on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial — “I Have a Dream,” grainy footage, a holiday, a monument.
But inside the King family home in Atlanta, he was simply “Daddy” — reading bedtime stories, playing piano, tying shoelaces… while death threats rang the phone and FBI files grew thicker by the week.

This documentary tells the deeply human story of the four King children who grew up in that house and then had to grow into a world that claimed their father as a martyr before they were even teenagers:

Yolanda Denise King (1955–2007) – the eldest, who remembered her father as a man before he was a monument, and used theater, storytelling and “Higher Ground Productions” to humanize her parents and carry their message through art.

Martin Luther King III (b. 1957) – the only son, born carrying his father’s name and burdened with the question: How do you honor the dream without becoming a replica of the dreamer? From community organizing to leading the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, he stepped into activism while openly wrestling with life “in my father’s vast shadow.”

Dexter Scott King (1961–2024) – the strategist and guardian of the legacy, who took on the legal, financial and archival battles around his father’s image, copyrights and assassination, chairing The King Center and defending Dr. King from being reduced to slogans or commercial branding.

Bernice Albertine King (b. 1963) – the youngest, raised in grief yet called into ministry, law and leadership. As CEO of The King Center and a global voice for nonviolence, she has become the spiritual and moral anchor of the King family in the 21st century.

From April 4, 1968 — the day the balcony of the Lorraine Motel split their lives in two — to boardrooms, pulpits, stages and courtrooms, this film traces how each child carried, reshaped, protected and sometimes struggled under the King legacy.

This is not just the story of a civil rights icon.
It is the story of four children whose family album became a public archive, whose grief was shared by a nation, and who spent their lives answering one relentless question:

What do you do when your last name is King,
your father is history —
and the world keeps asking you to finish his work?
