Yunus Emre Institute London once again orchestrated a memorable evening at St. Mary’s Islington on the 25 March 2024 and welcomed a vibrant crowd, eager to connect with the spirit of Ramadan through the universal language of music. The concert was not just a performance but a cultural confluence, celebrating the essence of Ramadan through the melodies that have echoed across Türkiye for centuries.

The event featured a quartet of masterful musicians who brought the rich and diverse heritage of Anatolian music to life. Baha Yetkin, with his mastery of the oud and his vocals, led the ensemble. Serdar Yılmaz’s expertise on the qanun added layers of complexity to the melodies. Umut Ekiz, with his passion for Anatolian folk music, skilfully played the kemane and saz, while Muammer Sağlam’s rhythmic prowess on various percussion instruments provided a solid foundation for the music.

The concert unfolded in two parts, with the first dedicated to the recitation of hymns that echoed the profound spirituality of Ramadan. The second part was a lively celebration with folk songs that had everyone’s spirits soaring. The selection of songs included the contemplative “Salât-ı Ümmiyye,” a prayerful homage to the Prophet Muhammad, and the emotive “Ben Yürürüm Yane Yane,” which spoke of spiritual love and longing. The hymn “Biz Dünyadan Gider Olduk” reflected on detachment from the worldly life, resonating deeply with the audience.

As the evening progressed, the music evoked a sense of nostalgia, as if the listeners were transported to a night in Türkiye, with its timeless traditions and cultural richness. The interactive songs, such as “Üsküdara Gideriken” and “Değmen Benim Gamlı Yaslı Gönlüme,” invited the audience to join in, creating a communal atmosphere of joy and unity.

The highlight of the night was the performance of “Aşkın İle Aşıklar Yansın Yâ Resûlallah,” a piece that seemed to set every heart aflame with its passionate delivery. The performance of “Yalan Dünya” touched the hearts of many, its poignant melody stirring a collective emotion among the listeners. Yet, the night concluded on a high note with “Ayva Çiçek Açmış,” a song that brought smiles and a sense of cherished joy, reflecting the hopeful essence of spring and the festive spirit of Ramadan.

It was indeed an unforgettable night, a full house where music transcended language and culture, uniting everyone in the celebration of life’s most cherished moments. The echoes of the evening’s melodies lingered long after the final note was played, a testament to the enduring power of Anatolian music.
