"We consider the assassination of Dr Abdel Aziz Rantisi, leader of Hamas, in Gaza tonight as a clear indication of the intent and guarantees that were agreed upon with (US President George W.) Bush and the American administration last week. We understood Bush's message as a clear indication for Sharon to act as he wishes regarding the assassination of Palestinian people and incursions (into Palestinian areas)."

STORYLINE:

There were angry scenes at a hospital in Gaza on Saturday following the deaths of Hamas leader Abdel Aziz Rantisi, his 27-year-old son Mohammed and 35-year-old bodyguard Akram Nassar.

Large crowds gathered outside the hospital, chanting loudly and demonstrating their outrage at the Israeli air strike that killed the three.

Islamic Jihad leader Khaled al Batish said United States President George W Bush was partly to blame for the assassination.

He suggested Bush had given approval to Israeli Prime Minister Aerial Sharon to act as he wanted, when the two met last week.

At the meeting in Washington, Bush endorsed Sharon's plan to withdraw from the Gaza Strip and a small section of the West Bank. But he angered many Palestinians by saying Israel should keep some large settlement blocs and not have to absorb Palestinian refugees under any peace deal.
