Join us for the next installment in our A to Z of Leeds Districts driving series! In this episode, we're taking a snapshot drive through two charming villages to the east of Leeds: Clifford and Boston Spa.

This video is a raw, real-time look at what it's like to drive through and explore these historic West Yorkshire communities.

🚗 The Drive:

We begin our journey into Clifford from the south, coming from the neighboring village of Bramham.

We navigate through Clifford's main streets, eventually exiting to the north as we cross the beautiful River Wharfe towards Thorp Arch.

We explore the larger village of Boston Spa, driving from the eastern edge near Newton Kyme all the way through to the western edge near the Ministry weighbridge by the A1(M).

📜 A Bit of History:

Clifford has a long history, dating back to at least the Domesday Book of 1086 where it was recorded as 'Clifort'. It grew significantly in the 19th century, thanks to the establishment of the Clifford’s Mills, which were primarily focused on flax spinning. The village retains much of its original character, with its handsome stone cottages.

Boston Spa is a much younger, planned settlement. It was founded in 1744 after John Taite discovered a mineral spring (chalybeate waters) here. It was initially named Thorp Spa but was renamed Boston Spa to attract visitors, inspired by the American city and potentially a local connection to the Boston family. It flourished as a popular Victorian spa town, and you can still see the impressive Georgian and Victorian architecture lining its riverside streets.
