Domestic Violence Is Hard and Dangerous To Escape. The abuser in a relationship can make it very difficult or dangerous for a victim to find safety or leave a relationship.  Some of the tactics used above are repeated or intensified when a victim leaves.  In fact, a victim’s risk of getting killed by an abuser greatly increases when they are in the process of leaving or have just left a relationship.  If you are thinking of leaving a relationship or know of someone who is thinking about or trying to leave a relationship, please call 9-1-1 and use or share the following domestic violence hotlines to get the help you need to make a safety plan or get resources.

IF YOU ARE IN IMMEDIATE DANGER, PLEASE CALL 9-1-1

Domestic Violence Hotlines
24-Hour Crisis Line National Domestic Violence Hotline(NDV) 1.800.799.SAFE (7233)
24-Hour Crisis Line Southern Crescent Sexual Assault Center 770.477.2177
24-Hour Statewide Hotline(GCADV):  1.800.33.HAVEN (1.800.334.2836)

Did you know that domestic violence happens equally in heterosexual and homosexual relationships, that battering is the single largest cause of injury to women in the United States – over mugging, automobile accidents and rape, combined, that between 3.3 and 10 million children witness domestic violence annually, that in 2009, Georgia was rated the 10th highest in the nation for the rate at which men kill women and in 2010, Georgia mourned at least 130 domestic violence related deaths? Know the facts about domestic violence:

NEW GA LAW HELPS SURVIVORS (INCLUDING INCARCERATED)

Survivors Justice Initiative was created by GCADV to promote and advocate for the passage of HB582, the Georgia Survivor Justice Act, which became law in May 2025. The Survivor Justice Act updated the criminal code & sentencing statutes, allowing survivors to have the full context of their situation considered at both trial and sentencing. It is retroactive and could help the majority of women in prison, as studies show 74% to 95% have experienced domestic or sexual violence.

To see graphics that offer a broad overview of the changes made by the Survivor Justice Act, visit https://gcadv.org/sji/sji-about/gasur...
Visit GCADV's Survivor Justice Act Resource Hub for more information on the new law, resources & materials, information on training & education opportunities, and more at https://gcadv.org/sji/sji-about/gasur...
