Smell of Gravity

This composition is based on a 4-bar loop played by pizzicato cello along with North Indian tamboura, tabla, and lite percussion for its foundation.  The loop itself and call & response melodic phrasing between the alto flute and bowed cello was most influenced the work of percussionist/composer Glen Velez (one of Steve Reich's long-time collaborators).  Melodically the scale used is a hybrid of both natural sharp 4th degrees plus natural & flat 6th and 7th degrees, and those colorations are free for the two soloists to draw on.  The harmony in the B Section is reminiscent of the great late medieval composer G. Machaut, while the Coda hints at both Mozart and Debussy.
