There are two types of meditation, one is concentrative meditation and the other is contemplated meditation. There are four types of concentrative meditation. First one is meditating on breath where you concentrate on the breath inhalation and exhalation. The second concentrative meditation is meditating on sound. You can meditate on a mantra or any pleasant sound. The third concentrative meditation is meditating on a form. Meditating on a form does not mean that you have to keep staring at a picture. That type of gazing is called trataka.

Meditating on a form means that you look at the image and assume that form and visualize the object internally. After a few seconds, that image will start to fade away or disappear. It will not be sharp anymore. At that point, open your eyes and look at the form and again visualize it internally. When you do this right, you will feel tired very soon. It is important to do this for five or seven or ten minutes and then take a break. The fourth is meditating on formless.
