Nigeria’s Tomato Crisis: Why Your Jollof Ingredients Are Getting More Expensive

Even though Nigeria ranks as the second-largest tomato producer in Africa, right after Egypt, we’re still grappling with tomato shortages and soaring prices. We manage to grow around 3.5 million metric tons of tomatoes each year, but shockingly, nearly half of that goes to waste after harvest due to poor storage facilities, bad roads, and inadequate handling practices.

🍅 Only about 2 million tons actually make it to kitchens across Nigeria, which is a far cry from the 4.4 million tons we need to satisfy our population of over 200 million. Our farms, particularly in regions like Kaduna, Kano, and Plateau, yield just 13 tons per hectare, while countries like China and Spain produce more than 50 tons.

As a consequence, Nigeria ends up spending a staggering $1 billion each year on importing tomato paste, despite our own production capabilities. This quiet crisis is a significant factor behind the rising costs of food—especially beloved staples like jollof rice.
