Many ancient animals have long been extinct, and we only learn about them through paleontological findings. But how well do you know those animals that still inhabit our planet, having survived the same dinosaurs? Most of these ancient representatives practically did not change for millions of years of their existence. Let's tell you about some of them!
Swordtail
The swordtail appeared on Earth about 445 million years ago. This arthropod has a rather unusual and sinister appearance, which borrowed the face from Alien! A characteristic feature of swordtails is their carapax, a massive dorsal shield that is shaped like a hoof.
In all this time, the swordtail has survived dinosaurs, volcanic eruptions, meteorite falls and great glaciations, while changing little in appearance.
Latimeria
This fish appeared on our planet about 400 million years ago. For the period of its existence, it has practically not changed. True, now Latimeria is on the verge of extinction, so catching these fish is strictly prohibited. In the past, this fish was actively eaten, although its taste and properties are... specific. Due to the high content of liquid fat, latimeria have a strong smell and taste of rottenness. It also causes diarrhea. It's probably best not to touch them.
They live in the tropics in groups, feed at night and are very leisurely, prefer to hunt in underwater caves.
Latimeria have many common features with cartilaginous fish, including “primitive”, but there are also their special features. For example, no other group of fish has seven lobed fins at once! Light spots are individual for each latimeria, they provide it with camouflage. It is also surprising that these fish are egg-living! That is, eggs (eggs) with embryos develop inside the female, and the pregnancy lasts about 13 months. The latimeria themselves become sexually mature only by the age of 20.... Their sexual system is extremely complex despite the mentioned “primitiveness”, and they themselves are considered long-lived.
Gutteria
And here's another long-lived reptile. This reptile appeared more than 220 million years ago, and at the moment gatteria inhabit New Zealand. Gatteria are the only representatives of a special detachment - beak-headed. Alas, due to imported species, the number of these reptiles has decreased. Their length reaches 60-70 centimeters, similar to iguanas, only they have a well-developed “third eye” on the back of the head.
Platypus
Platypuses are considered to be First Beasts for being the most primitive mammals to have appeared on Earth since the time of the dinosaurs. They appeared on the planet 110 million years ago. Their discovery was a real sensation, to the point that no one could believe in their existence: the debate among scientists lasted 80 years! The first platypus skin, delivered to Britain at the end of the 18th century, was considered a fake.
These animals are very sensitive to pollution, so their numbers are also small. They live in eastern Australia in burrows they have dug and spend a lot of time in the water, where at night they collect crustaceans, insect larvae and worms in their cheek pouches.
