A joint patrol operation has been launched in the central and northern parts of the Taiwan Strait, the Fujian Maritime Safety Administration announced on Wednesday.

The operation is part of the administration's annual patrol work plan and involves multiple maritime enforcement vessels, according to a brief news release of the administration, which included an illustrated map of the Taiwan Strait.

It aims to secure the navigation environment and order along some important and busy ship routes, handle ship violations and prevent commercial and fishing vessel collisions.

The Haixun 06, or Sea Patrol 06, which is a large maritime patrol vessel deployed in the Taiwan Strait, is leading the patrol, according to Yuyuantantian, an online news account affiliated to China Media Group (CMG).

The account released a short video earlier on Wednesday showing pilots in the cockpit steering the ship.

On the first day of the operation, law enforcement officers conducted a pre-departure check on a cross-Strait cargo ship berthing at the Jinjing Wharf in Pingtan, the Chinese mainland's closest point to Taiwan.

The operation lasts for three days.
