In India, 9% of all pregnancies in a year are teenage pregnancies among girls aged 15-19. This can be a crucial time for girls as they are focusing on their education and future, but a pregnancy and child can be incredibly disruptive.

Causes of teenage pregnancy
There are several causes of teenage pregnancy:
Accidental pregnancy: Many teenagers do not know much about safe sex practices.
Child marriage: Unfortunately, many people do not follow the Child Marriage Act in India.
Forceful intercourse and sexual abuse.

Impact of teen pregnancy on mother and baby
Teenage pregnancy can have a significant impact on both the mother and the baby. Here are a few potential consequences:

Mother:
Increased risk of preeclampsia (high blood pressure during pregnancy)
Increased risk of anemia
Increased risk of unsafe abortions
Increased risk of uterine and blood infections
Psychological trauma, fear, depression, and unsafe abortion practices
Difficulty conceiving in the future
Disrupted education and socioeconomic changes
Facing difficult choices about abortion, adoption, or single parenting

Baby:
Premature birth
Low birth weight
Prevention

It's important to educate both boys and girls on safe sex practices:
For girls: The most common contraceptive method is the oral contraceptive pill.
For boys: The barrier method (condom) is recommended. Condoms provide dual protection - preventing pregnancy and the spread of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).
Government Initiatives

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, has launched several initiatives to address the issue of teenage pregnancy:

Rashtriya Kishor Swasthya Karyakram (RKSK): Launched on January 7th, 2014, this program targets 253 million adolescents (both male and female, rural and urban, married and unmarried, in-school and out-of-school) with a special focus on marginalized and underserved groups.

Ayushman Bharat School Health and Wellness Program: A component of the Ayushman Bharat campaign launched in February 2020, this program is implemented in government and government-aided schools. Two teachers (preferably one male and one female) are designated as Health and Wellness Ambassadors in each school and trained to work with school children on health promotion and prevention.

Breaking the Stigma
In this digital era, it's the responsibility of parents and teachers to educate students about sex, sexuality, and the consequences of unsafe practices. The internet is filled with a wide variety of information, and teens need guidance on how to discern accurate and trustworthy information. They should receive this information directly, so they can take more responsibility and make sensible decisions in their lives. Schools also need to modify their curriculum and include counseling sessions for students.
