This comes from a list of distilleries I compiled a while back for vPub consideration; those that - I think - are unique or interesting enough to warrant some closer consideration.
Arguably, all distilleries are, but I think we all agree there are some distilleries or brands that have, for many reasons, become much more visible. Somehow, they have built something of a unique reputation and they can often transcend our enthusiasts’ ‘whisky bubble’ and become something of a globally recognised entity.
However, I think there’s something odd about these distilleries in the context of what I do and specifically the Aqvavitae channel and the vPub: they almost never feature. While some may find that weird, many more will consider it obvious. We all know why. Or do we?
I think these distilleries could genuinely be worthy of a little extra time. If this is of interest, it could even become a series of ‘deep dives’ - through the liquid, of course.
And if we’re going to tackle such a concept then there’s an obvious place to start, but I have to admit it’ll be a little like ripping the plaster off.
This is whisky I don’t buy, not with an official brand on the label. In fact, everything about its pretentious positioning grates against my better judgement. It screams - from every contact point - not for you!
Yet, it’s one of the largest malt distilleries in Scotland by volume, and one of only three that regularly surpasses a million cases sold each year. So, why is it not for me?
I’m speaking, of course, about The Macallan (I had to go back and correct the fact I hadn’t capitalised the definite article there).
Because, if we’re going to continue to ignore it, as a community, don’t you think we’d best know why?
