In Memory of Imtiaz Mir: A Voice of Truth Silenced
By Shoukat Ali Zardari

I first met journalist Imtiaz Mir in 2008, when he appeared as a guest on my show along with Ali Bhangar. From that day, what started as a professional connection soon grew into a lasting friendship.

Over the years, we worked side by side at KTN News and later at Awaz TV. Imtiaz was more than just a colleague — he became a trusted friend and confidant. Together, we navigated the challenges of journalism in Sindh, sharing not only the pressures of deadlines but also the untold stories and risks that come with reporting the truth.

In 2016, during his visit to the United States, Imtiaz and I lived together for six months. Those were some of our most memorable days, filled with long discussions about journalism, politics, and the future of free speech in Sindh. He was passionate, fearless, and committed to giving a voice to the voiceless.

His tragic death is not just a personal loss for me but a devastating blow to journalism in our province. What hurts even more is the government’s response — dismissing his killing as a matter of “personal conflict” rather than investigating it as a threat to press freedom. This attitude has left journalists feeling more vulnerable and has exposed the growing risks we face for simply doing our job.

Imtiaz Mir’s life and work remind us why journalism matters — and why protecting journalists must be taken seriously. His death must not be reduced to a statistic. It should serve as a call to action for authorities to ensure the safety of reporters and to investigate such crimes with urgency and transparency.

For those of us who knew him, Imtiaz was a friend, a mentor, and a brother. For Sindh, he was a brave journalist whose commitment to truth will not be forgotten. His voice has been silenced, but his legacy must inspire us to keep fighting for a free and safe press.
