To make these balancing toys you need a card butterfly, press button, and a toothpick mounted on a bottle. Cut the outline of the butterfly from a card sheet 15-cm long and 10-cm wide. Color it beautifully with crayons. Mark three points – two on the wing tips and one right in the middle. Punch out three holes on these marks. Now fix one press buttons in the middle hole such that the part with the depression is below. Fix two more press buttons in the wing tips. They will add to the weight of the wings and help the butterfly balance. Finally bend the butterfly so as to lower the center of gravity.

Mount a toothpick on a bottle filled with sand. Perch the center button of the butterfly on the toothpick point. The butterfly will balance beautifully and spin gracefully. On giving it a twirl it will keep rotating for a long time. Instead of the butterfly you can make a card figurine. Once again punch three holes and fix three press buttons and perch it on a toothpick. The figurine will balance well and spin beautifully. This work was supported by IUCAA and Tata Trust.
