Performance Notes:

The “Sinfonia” from Bach’s Cantata 156 (now known widely has Bach’s “Arioso”) began its life as part of an oboe concerto and later was incorporated as the intermezzo to his “Concerto” for Harpsichord in F minor.
The solo line may be freely ornamented (and hopefully tastefully ornamented). As with many Baroque Adagios, the tempo may be felt at the eighth-note, but always the soloist should connect the notes in a cantabile manner. There is some articulation noted in this arrangement, however, the player needn’t feel constrained to them. Legato is the main goal, and if that is best achieved by adding slurs on occasion, then he or she should do so. For the sake of consistency, repeated motivic elements would ideally be articulated in the same way.
