It is undoubtedly in the richness of the cello part that Boccherini’s great talent is to be found: technical skill is combined with ardent expressiveness - a fact that was recognized throughout 18th-century Europe. It is surely significant that when he died in 1805 the obituarists stresses the fact that ‘in earlier days he was an excellent cellist who produced a bewitching effect by the incomparable tone expressive melodiousness of this instrument.’ A french writer echoed this german tribute, describing Boccherini as ‘a marvellous cellist who captivated us above all by the incomparable sonority and intense exppressiveness of his playing.’ These two nations had different attitudes to Boccherini as a composer but they were thus far unanimous.
