Under trainer supervision, a group of students pursuing electrical and electronics engineering under the new Tvet Cdacc Page curriculum have worked on & are still developing to improve a low cost solar powered chicken egg incubator at BUTERE TECHNICAL TRAINING INSTITUTE , this student-led research project is aimed at improving and commercializing indigenous poultry farming within the immediate community. The innovation aligns with the Tvet Authority Kenya Page and Ministry of Education - Kenya mission of providing hands-on, sustainable, and market-driven skills for national development.
Why Solar?
1. TVET Relevance
Solar powered systems, installation & maintenance are a core part of the Tvet Cdacc Page curriculum, with quality training, students have a wide field of practice where they can apply their skills and integrate that into several electricity powered projects.
2. Off-grid Accessibility
Many rural areas lack affordable, reliable electricity. Low cost solar powered systems ensure that innovative technologies like incubators can work anywhere.
3.Scalability
Solar powered systems can be scaled upon need or modified to support other agricultural related technologies like food dryers, irrigation/water pumping systems, general power point outlets & lighting systems.
4.Sustainability
Electrical/energy generated from solar powered systems is relatively clean and renewable, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and lowering carbon footprints.
why Incubators?
1. Inspiring an innovative mindset
A basic egg incubator does incorporate theoretical concepts like electrical/electronics circuit design, electrical installation, thermal control, perfect for TVET students which can be implemented practically and applied to demonstrate how local challenges can be solved through practical innovation and applied science. This also encourages the learning by doing - approach.
2.Increased hatch rates from an incubator model like this (60 - 120) every 21 days reliably and consistently as compared to 10 - 15 chicks if a hen does it is essential to achieving food security from the family level to the national level, the positive effect ripples across and can be felt in the education, finance and other sectors.
3. Income Generation
Selling chicks or grown poultry creates quick and repeatable income, for students, this can be implemented in group project work and exploited positively to help earn some pocket money.
