In this video I make a contact staff using aluminium 7075T6.

For your 1st Contact Staff you want the length to be as long as possible without it hitting the floor. Typically, from the floor to anywhere between your nipples and nose. A good go to size is 150cm, but if you're quite short try 140cm.

Beginners are better off with a longer staff with flowers. Between 3/4" and 7/8" (19mm-22mm) diameter.

the thicker the staff the faster it will roll on you, the flowers slow this down. The more sensitive you become to a staffs movements the thinner you can go. In the US they favour really thin staffs, and in Europe we seem to favour thicker. But if you don't have flowers you can simply go for a thinner staff as it rolls slower... I find that the added drag that flowers provide drastically helps as it slows everything down.

Thicker staffs are more suited to complex rolling tricks like devil rolls, and steves. While thinner staffs lend themselves to moves like matrix.

Throughout my Cstaff experience, my Staffs have been getting shorter and lighter the more I excel. A natural progression. I am 6ft 3in and I started with 150cm. then a 160cm, it was to big, went back to 150cm, then settled on 140cm for a long time, then favoured 130cm. And now I enjoy lots of technical moves, and am back up to 150cm.

The silicone is there to prevent any burns! The burns you receive while fire spinning are most commonly from HOT metal... it also adds end weight, and improves momentum.

With contact staff momentum is key. The wicks on the end add the weight which provide the momentum. If you want keep THE COST DOWN, or make a practice staff then you can replace the wick with rubber inner tube and tape, and loose the silicone. As rubber is more dense, the physical size will be smaller than compared to a wick to achieve the same weight. I have found that around 3/4 of a standard adult mnt bicycle inner tube for each end is enough. You can use colourful tape to make it more pretty if you want.

To PROTECT your wicks, to stop smell and prevent everything getting sooty once you've burned it, use beer bottle cosies for ease of slip on slip off. (I snip the tag off the zipper as it's annoying)

Home of poi sell average quality kevlar. I have a 15% discount code: Oscar2

but if you have any questions please ask.
