Cause & Impact of Largest Mass Extinction of All Time- End Permian Extinctions | GEO GIRL

The great dying or the end Permian Mass Extinction was the largest extinction event of all time! Nearly 96% of all life on Earth was wiped out during the late Permian in two major extinction events, the End Guadalupian Extinction and the End Permian Extinction. The guadalupian event devastated sponges and coral reefs as well as forams were hit hard during the Guadalupian extinction making their devastation during the end Permian extinction even worse. This first Guadalupian event was likely caused by volcanism, and ocean acidification and anoxic. The second event at the end Permian was caused my a multitude of conditions coming together to create an inhospitable world that led to the extinction or major decline of fusulinids, rugose corals, tabulate corals, trilobites, conodonts, ammonoids, brachiopods, crinoids, echinoids, & bryozoans. Global warming contributed to ocean acidification and stagnation which caused a lack of oxygen in the oceans (ocean anoxia), which all contributed to the extinctions. Regression of epicontinental seas during the formation of pangea and raising of continental crust also caused many extinctions to the species that lived in those seas. Much of the land that made up Pangea was so far away from an ocean that dry conditions led to evaporite deposits. But what (other than Pangea forming) set off the global warming that led to most of the extinctions? Volcanism from the Siberian Traps was likely what set off the End Permian Extinctions.
