Reg Dwight (Elton John) was the keyboardist for The Bread and Beer Band in the late 1960s - at the same time he was attempting to launch his solo career as Elton John. The other members of the band were Caleb Quaye on guitar, Roger Pope on drums, Bernie Calvert (of the Hollies) on bass, and Lennox Jackson on percussion. They were produced by Tony King, who initiated the whole project. They recorded an album of instrumental covers, mostly in blues-rock style, at Abbey Road Studios, but this album was never released. Many bootleg copies have spread the globe. Caleb Quaye remembers, "We had no money, which is why we called ourselves the Bread & Beer Band."

The song "Needles and Pins" was written by Jack Nitzsche and Sonny Bono, and originally released by Jackie DeShannon in 1963.
