Moorish Tower and Artificial Grotto

As well as the Moorish Greenhouse, Jappelli also designed a Tower, also inspired by Arabian architectural and decorative models, and an artificial Grotto.
Inside the Tower, there is an exquisite small dining room, richly decorated with stucco painted in very bright colours and Moorish style windows. The room once hid a mechanism designed to amaze the Prince's guests: a set dining table would come up from the kitchen through an opening in the floor, at the same time lifting the central sofa in the dining room and transforming it into a canopy.
In Jappelli's project, the Tower could only be accessed by walking through a large artificial grotto - the Nymphae Loci, as the inscription outside the original entrance says - which was attached to it. Most of the grotto, which was built with fragile materials (wood, stucco, plaster, tuff), had already collapsed by the beginning of the 20th century, and in the absence of drawings and photographs it hasn't been possible to reproduce it. However, it can still be
"imagined" by following the shapes of the tuff buttresses and brickwork that surround the external area, and also by looking at the holes in the walls where the wooden supports of the vault were was once housed. Thanks to the restoration works, it was possible to reactivate the 2 small artificial ponds with waterfalls and the grotto below the Tower, which gives some idea of what the atmosphere in Jappelli Grotto's was like; a semi-dark cave with stalactites and stalagmites, covered with moss and rich vegetation.
