Welcome! This video is my book recommendations for my upcoming February 2021 Law Office Newsletter!
I was motivated to read this book because it is one of Jeff Bezo's (founder of Amazon) favorite business books, and it is required reading for his top level managers at Amazon. So, it got me curious. If one billionaire is recommending another billionaire's book, I may want to get me a copy and read it too!
The book does not disappoint. Sam Walton wrote this book toward the end of his life, and he has excerpts from his wife, Helen Walton, and his top business associates. So, you get to hear their insights as well as Mr. Walton.
Sam Walton's secret weapon was putting the customer first, always, and this slashed down his prices, and created wacky promotions to attract foot traffic. Who does not like a good deal on goods? He also targeted small towns with populations of less than 5,000 people, while his competitors, the Kmarts of the day, were chasing down larger towns and cities of at least 50,000 people. So, Sam Walton was a maverick in terms of doing the opposite of everyone else, and running an efficient operation in order to offer super low prices, all the while working to increase foot traffic in his stores.
He also treated his employees kindly, and offered profit sharing plans in the early 1970s. One of his best investment decisions. This created a family of ownership environment that is still felt today. As an injury lawyer, I have had to sue Walmart in a few injury claims over the years, and I can feel this enthusiasm of Walmart employees when taking their depositions.
