There's not a video game developer out there with more ludicrous ideas than Hideo Kojima. From infants inside throats giving you the thumbs up, to rain which makes you old and a holographic Conan O'Brien who is obsessed with otters, Kojima Productions' 2019 game Death Stranding is one of the strangest experiences you can have in the medium of video games. And from the looks of the Death Stranding 2: On The Beach trailer, Kojima isn't letting up on any of the absurdity for the Death Stranding sequel releasing in 2025.

One of the most understatedly odd things in Death Stranding though is its central mechanic: crossing a vast wasteland of a post-apocalyptic America as a courier, delivering goods to the people living in remote cities. Sam Porter Bridges stacks a tower of boxes onto his back and treks on foot across rugged mountainous terrain. It's a peculiar image for sure, one certainly fitting of a Hideo Kojima game. But as it turns out, this job was inspired by a very real profession in rural Japan, called Bokka.
