Welcome to Cancer Questions with Dana Farber. My name is Dr. Huma Rana, and I'm clinical director of Cancer Genetics and Prevention. Today's question is "Why is genetic counseling an important part of genetic testing?"

Undergoing germline genetic testing is very much a personal decision. Genetic counselors are experts in genetics and can help one to understand what their risks are, whether they're at high risk, medium risk or low risk for having a genetic mutation. Genetic counselors can also help after one has received genetic test results. They can help to interpret what those results mean, whether or not they explain the cancers in the family or, the family history of cancer, or one's personal history of cancer.

In addition, genetic counselors can help family members to undergo germline genetic testing. They can help make sense of what can be confusing information.
