Описание к видео Building Green: How Your Material Choices Affect Climate & Carbon Emissions

Building a net-zero home doesn’t mean much if the materials you use have a massive carbon footprint. In this video, I break down how we approached the Yeti Cooler House with a “carbon-smart construction” mindset—focusing on embodied carbon, long-term durability, and products that don’t sabotage the climate goals of the home.

Most homes today are insulated with spray foam, which might perform well at first but carries a high global warming potential (GWP) due to its blowing agents. It’s like going on a diet and binging before starting—your building takes a huge carbon hit right out of the gate. Not to mention, the building moves over time and spray foam will crack, compromising the air barrier.

Instead, we built our home using:

Zero spray foam
Recycled EPS reclaimed from a local hospital project
Flexible, durable air-barrier systems: Vana tape + Intello Plus
Cellulose insulation
Products with dramatically lower embodied carbon

I also walk through how blowing agents like those in closed-cell spray foam (GWP 1030) and XPS rigid foam (GWP 1430) compare with lower-impact materials like EPS and cellulose, and why that matters for anyone aiming to build sustainably.

If you care about:
Embodied carbon in construction; low-carbon building materials
How to reduce your home’s carbon footprint
Net-zero or Passive House building
Healthy indoor air quality
Long-term airtightness and durability

…this video will help you rethink the materials going into your home.

We designed the Yeti Cooler House to be as carbon negative as possible in the air-barrier and insulation package — and the lessons apply to any high-performance build.
