Take three trash cans, cut out the bottoms, make the most simple lugs possible, add some heads, hoops, etc. 1mm shell wall. Bearing edges? No. The tops are just rolled over, the bottoms are just crimped. I just filed off any sharp spots. All but one of the heads are too big, owing to the trash can cylinders obviously not made to accommodate drum heads. I used what came closest. Lug placement and shape was tricky because of all the shapes in the cans. Trust me. I did NOT go out of my way to make anything special. Quite the contrary.

So, what do we have? We have drums. No hype. Nothing to brag about, that's for sure. Just drums, and they sound pretty cool. The tom sounds tubby, owing to it's depth. The same with the FT but, it's sheer volume overcomes some of that tone. Plus it is pretty close to the floor, with legs having no isolation tips, which isolates the drum from the floor and the sound absorption that can take place, typically drying out the tone some. The BD is just a cannon for it's size heads; just odd to play, for me.

If these were typical drum dimensions, or shallow, like my preferred dimensions, they'd sound a lot more musical because the sound waves would move faster off the heads and create more excitement in the cylinder.

Like Tubie, the compressed paper drum in videos 4 and 5, this continues to show the sound of a drum is the heads, not the shell. The shell contributes nuances and subtleties. If I played these drums on a recording or live, behind a screen, would anyone know they were trash cans? No. Are they warm sounding like wood, no. Could they be EQ'd to warm them up? Yes. I could also change the heads to a warmer sounding type.

PLEASE overlook the playing. No excuses. Just one of those days and after five attempts I said, "Forget it, I'm done." I just messed around to show how they sound. That said, playing an 18" bass drum head, on a 26" deep drum was strange, indeed. Not a feel I am close to used to. Same with the tom and FT, if you have seen any of my other sets. I like shallow drums. And I left the BD drum almost wide open. Just three weatherstripping pieces stuck in place on the 18." I made a simple cradle for the bass drum to attach the pedal. Works well. Playing a 14" tom in front of me. I haven't done that since I was a teenager. It's amazing how our bodies and minds get used to certain distances for movements.

These are the drum head sizes, not the actual cylinder sizes at their openings: 12/14 x 12.5" deep tom, 16/18 x 23" deep FT, 18/22 x 26" BD, and the snare is one I made out of a thick aluminum shell a friend made for me back in the 90's, 7 x 13. Aside from the twin-ply 22" all the heads are single-ply, clear: Attack, Evans, and an Aquarian.
