Cohesion within the community is non-negotiable to withstand the hostile onslaught from the outsiders.
• Hence, he addresses the people in authority within the church as “the elders.”
• Peter, the apostle, is in incarnational tone while speaking as “a fellow elder.”
o He is an apostle of Jesus Christ (1:1). His additional qualification, “a witness of Christ’s suffering” and a fellow shareholder in the future glory, “share in the glory to be revealed” (5:1). They underline his position of authority.
o Fellow elder is possibly Peter’s coinage with an interest to underline a function of a leader (leading and guarding) within the church than the office as seen in 2nd century. By this he desires to come down to the level of all local leaders to teach them their leadership role.
