Few mourned the passing of the Ford Taurus. After all, it was March 2019 when Ford announced it would no longer produce the car. That year there were 9,924 Taurus’s sold, good for 0.01% share of the global market. At this point the Taurus was a relic from the 1990s. MotorTrend compared owning a Taurus to wearing wet socks. Carbuzz had called it “irrelevant for the American market” three years earlier. Sometime later that year the last Taurus rolled off the assembly plant in Chicago, IL and the world moved on.

It hadn’t always been this way. Between 1992 and 1996 the Ford Taurus was the best selling car in America. Over three million models were sold during its 34 year run between 1985 and 2019. When the Taurus launched, it was named MotorTrend car of the year - the same company that compared it to wearing wet socks 34 years later. It saved its parent company, Ford, from bankruptcy back in the day. It triggered a rebirth of American automobile manufacturing. It was so cool that it was the car used by Robocop. Here’s the story and tribute to the rise and fall of the Ford Taurus.
