Saab 900 – The most intelligent car of the 80s

Today, I’m going to tell you a story about a car that had a lot of unusual but smart engineering solutions and one of the most distinctive looks of the 80’s – the Saab 900. It was produced in two generations from 1978 to 1994 and from 1994 to 1998.
It was a very technically advanced car for its time with a lot of unusual but smart engineering solutions.
There are not that many cars that have a really distinctive look, so you know what it is at first glance. The Saab 900 was one of those rare examples. Its a little disproportional exterior was very unusual and you could easily distinguish it from anything else even from the distance. You might love it or hate it, but everything in that exterior was made with purpose.
Inside, the car had the same approach – unusual but very smart. Saab was the first manufacturer to introduce an ergonomic approach to the positioning of buttons and switches on the front panel, in the same manner, as the control panels of aircrafts were designed.
And the 900 was a very safe car, too. When we speak about car safety, we usually recall Volvo. But actually, in the 80’s, the Saab 900 was named the safest car in the world by many experts.
The 900s were comfortable and well-thought-out cars. They were very practical and spacious for their class. They were comfortable and convenient both for short everyday city rides and for long journeys. It had decent dynamics, especially in turbo versions, and it had great suspension, steering, and brakes.
It was definitely one of the most interesting, uncommon, and technically stuffed cars of the 80s. It was a combination of two uncrossable worlds: a family car that was more like a disguised affordable sports car.
