Today is Earth Day!

Earth Day was started in 1970 by United States Senator Gaylord Nelson (D-Wa). He was horrified by the 1969 oil spill in California and founded this day to shine light on the environmental issues that affect all of us!

What started in the United States has now spread out to 184 countries. Earth Day or International Mother Earth Day became recognized worldwide in 1990. After all, we do all live on this planet.

On the very first Earth Day, 20 million people gathered to protest the Industrial Revolution. A portion of 5th Avenue was closed in New York City for the 20,000 people rallying together in Union Square. Thousands of schools participated in Earth Day and continue to do so every year.

While being cognizant of the Earth today is great, we need to be doing more things every day to save the planet! Half of the world’s tropical and temperate forests are gone. The Arctic is melting away. fisheries are overfished, and trash is taking over, and pollution is killing the the Earth. According to Sustainable Materials Management, in 2009, humans already consumed more resources in those past 50 years than in all previous history!
