As she embarks on a new Apple TV series, “Smoke,” alongside Taron Egerton, Jurnee Smollett joined an episode of Boardroom Talks to discuss her longevity in the business, the selection process for picking roles, the legacy of HBO’s Lovecraft Country and more. Smollett, joined by Boardroom’s Michelai Graham reflected on the career that began for her when she was just a child growing up in New York City. She credits longevity that she’s been able to achieve to loyalty, trial and error with building the perfect team around her and being selective with which roles she decides to take on, a lesson she learned early from her mother. Later in the conversation, Smollett discusses working alongside Taron Egerton on their newest project and how the workload demanded their relationship to buoy from a brother and sister-like dynamic to more tense, but in a way that brought the best out of both actors. She also shares her philosophy on working with ensemble casts, letting a project’s ending run its course and her Broadway aspirations she hopes to make a part of her legacy.
