Augustine believed that mankind was born in sin and that the only way to redemption was through God's grace. Man had to be liberated from the intellectual confines of the material city (such as Rome) and come close to the city of God (represented by the Church).

These ideas had a huge influence on Western civilisation and many later movements really cannot be understood without some knowledge of this background.
