The tracheobronchial tree is a vital part of the respiratory system, serving as the main passageway for air to flow into and out of the lungs. It begins with the trachea, a 10-12 cm long tube supported by C-shaped cartilaginous rings that prevent collapse while allowing flexibility. The trachea extends from the larynx to the thoracic cavity, where it splits into the right and left main bronchi at the carina.

The right bronchus is shorter, wider, and more vertical, making it more prone to foreign body aspiration. Each bronchus enters its respective lung at the hilum and branches into lobar bronchi: three on the right and two on the left. These further divide into segmental bronchi, corresponding to specific lung segments.

The segmental bronchi subdivide into smaller bronchioles, which lack cartilage but have smooth muscle for controlling airflow. Bronchioles lead to terminal bronchioles, marking the end of the conducting zone, and then transition into respiratory bronchioles, where gas exchange begins.

Respiratory bronchioles open into alveolar ducts that connect to clusters of alveoli. These tiny, balloon-like air sacs are surrounded by capillaries and are where oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged through thin alveolar walls.

The tracheobronchial tree is lined with ciliated epithelium and goblet cells that produce mucus, forming a mucociliary clearance system to trap and expel harmful particles and pathogens. This structure supports essential functions like air conduction, filtration, and humidification, ensuring efficient respiration and lung health. Its intricate design underscores its crucial role in breathing and maintaining overall respiratory function.
