Turkey tested first Air-to-Surface missile from Akinci

Turkey’s Bayraktar Akinci unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) has successfully test-fired the country’s first air-to-surface supersonic missile TRG-230-IHA manufactured by the Roketsan. The missile has successfully struck its target at the distance of 100 km. The missile was fired by the UAV hovering overing over an altitude of 7.62 km. The range of the missile varies between 20 to 150 km.

Did Turkey test a Hypersonic Missile?

There are multiple reports claiming it to be hypersonic missile. There are even some media reports which claims it to be air launched ballistic missile. However, the best place to verify this kind of news is official handles. The Selcuk Bayraktar and the official handle of Rokestan has reported the missile to be supersonic and you can see their tweet on the screen.

A hypersonic missile is of two types – one powered by scramjet engine and other one uses hypersonic glide vehicle. None of these are observed in the TRG-230-IHA missile.

TRG-230-IHA Missile

The TRG-230-IHA air to surface missile seems to be a modified version of TRG-230 Missile which can be fired from ROKETSAN Multi-Barrel Rocket Launcher. It’s basically a 230mm guided rocket similar to Pinaka Guided rockets by DRDO with range between 20-70 km. For Navigation the missile uses INS aided with GPS/GLONASS and has accuracy of less than 10m CEP. The missile weighs 215 kg with warhead of 42 kg. It’s a smart move by Turkey to convert a rocket into an air launched missile. The control surfaces which include fin at the tail and upper section of the TRG-230-IHA missile is same as the TRG-230 missile. It also appears that not much modification has been done in the rocket and extended range can be achieved by the TRG-230-IHA missile as its air launched and will not have to spend propellant in overcoming gravity and will have initial velocity of the Akinci UCAV.

Akinci UCAV

The new missiles will significantly expand the combat capabilities of the Akinci drone which is a high-altitude long-endurance (HALE) unmanned combat aerial vehicle (UCAV) being manufactured by the Turkish defence company Baykar.

The Akinci drone is equipped with an indigenously manufactured AESA radar, a SAR/GMTI radar, a surveillance system, electronic warfare, and signal intelligence suite (SIGINT), and SATCOM allowing Akinci to become an UCAV as well as ISTAR+C3 asset for Turkish military. The UCAV has a flight altitude between 30,000-40,000 ft with flight time of 24hrs. It has a maximum take-off weight of 6000 kg with payload capacity of 1500 kg.

Bayraktar AKINCI can be used in air-to-ground and air-to-air attack missions as well. On 22 April 2021, Akıncı has successfully conducted its first firing tests, during which the UCAV was equipped with three different variants of the smart ammunitions MAM-L, MAM-C and MAM-T developed by Rokestan.
