Witness recalls scene at Broadwater Farm during 1985 riots - Daily Mail

Oliver Letwin, who is David Cameron’s policy chief (pictured together), was an aide to Margaret Thatcher when he said a black entrepreneurs scheme would fail because people would just 'set up in the disco and drug trade' (top left). His comments were discovered in secret files released yesterday and written in the wake of riots in Handsworth, Birmingham (main picture) and Broadwater Farm in Tottenham, north London, both in 1985. Campaigners and MPs branded his words racist and Mr Letwin has apologised 'unreservedly'.
