Antonio Allegretti (Cuneo, 1840-Carrara, 1918) sculpted “Eve after the Sin” in 1881.

The woman’s posture reminds us of a funerary monument created in 1875 by Allegretti’s teacher, Santo Varni, for his wife Giuditta.

Currently in Rome’s National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art, the sculpture represents the mother of all humankind as the “Eva tristis” mentioned by Bishop of Poitiers, Venanzio Fortunato (530-609) in his “O gloriosa Domina”. Eve is saddened for having lost Paradise, with the infinite happiness and beauty that God had prepared for her and all her descendants.

Except… Venanzio Fortunato’s hymn is about Mary, who changed the destiny of man by miraculously giving birth to the Son of God. After a history of sadness and sin, finally there was hope. (italianways)
