'Innovative Approaches to Reduce Drug Deaths and Harms'

Scottish Drugs Forum and Hepatitis Scotland hosted a conference to mark International Overdose Awareness Day, a day to remember those who have been affected by drug overdose.

The event was also an opportunity to bring together expertise from around the globe to discuss harm reduction approaches that are currently being implemented.

Speakers included:

Dr Marianne Jauncey of Sydney's Medically Supervised Injection Centre, Australia who discussed the facility she works in, and how this could possibly be implemented in Glasgow.

Dr Thilo Beck of Arud Centres for Addiction Medicine, Switzerland who discussed his programme of Heroin Assisted Treatment (HAT) that he operates in Zurich.

Professor Sir John Strang of Kings College London who discussed his reflections from the Randomised Injectable Opiate Treatment Trial (RIOTT).

Marcus Keane of the Ana Liffey Drug Project, Dublin who discussed the current progress towards the implementation of a Supervised Injection Facility in Ireland.

Saket Priyardarshi, Associate Medical Director of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and Mark Rodgers who discussed the health needs of people who inject drugs in public places in Glasgow city centre.

Kirsten Horsburgh, National Naloxone Coordinator at Scottish Drugs Forum presented on her Winston Churchill Memorial Trust Fellowship to Australia, where she met with harm reduction advocates and worked in Sydney's Medically Supervised Injecting Centre.
