Nearly a century ago, Jyotindra Nath Barua started his small business of baking cakes. Since his clientele was largely the Anglo-Indian community of the city, he opened a shop close to Bow Barracks, where several members of the community lived. The traditional Christmas cakes made by the bakery have always been a hot favourite during Christmas. They make around 9 -10 varieties of cake during this time - fruit, wine, rum, walnut, etc. Barua's signature item is however, their invention, the unique Chanar Cake made from Chana and the ingredients of a fruit cake, like cherries and candied dry fruits added to the mix.

J.N. Barua Cake Shop reminds you of an almost lost era, when Bow Barracks, the vibrant Anglo-Indian para of the city thrived in all its hues. Much of it has faded, however, icons like Barua’s Cake Shop still survive, as an integral part of that para with the cluster of red brick buildings with the trademark green windows.
