With these looming threats surrounding its territorial waters, and within its exclusive economic zone, the Philippine Government, will acquire, faster and bigger vessels. From the builder of BRP Gabriela Silang (OPV-8311), the world’s largest aluminum-hulled offshore patrol vessel. The OCEA Shipbuilding and Industries, will build, 40, fast-response-craft, following the approval of a $438 million around 25.4 billion pesos aid project to enhance Manila’s maritime security capabilities across the archipelagic waters.
According to the OCEA website, the model FPB-110 to be delivered to the Philippine Coast Guard, is 35 meters long, and can accommodate 17 crew members. With its Versatility and easy to operate, it can reach speeds of up to 28 knots to 35 knots, and run for up to 1,296 kilometers (700 nautical miles) without refueling.
The French-built boats, will resemble the agency’s existing 44-meter Parola-class multi-role response vessels from Japan. According to the project description, the first 20 Fast Response Crafts, will be constructed in France, and the other 20 in the Philippines, contributing to job creation, and technology transfer in the local shipbuilding industry. France will also provide logistical support for the vessels and equipment for six bases.
The signing of the deal came almost a month, after Philippine Coast Guard announced, that Manila would also procure five more units of 97-meter multirole response vessels from Japan. The five vessels, will be of a model, similar to BRP Teresa Magbanua, the PCG’s largest and most modern vessel. Their acquisition would be funded under an official development assistance loan from Japan worth 23.85 billion pesos.
The procurement of five more 97-meter multirole response vessels is already underway, and the first of the five ships is set to arrive in late 2027, while the remaining four, is set to deliver to the Philippines between 2027 and 2028, according to the Philippine Coast Guard.
