Tarikh Episode 666

In this episode Nikhil Talks about Tibet–Ladakh–Mughal War of 1679–1684, unfolded in the late 17th century, triggered by Ladakh's alignment with Bhutan against Tibet. Galdan Chhewang, appointed by the 5th Dalai Lama, led a Tibeto-Mongolian expedition against Ladakh. Victorious in initial battles, Galdan Chhewang faced resistance from Ladakh's fortresses Basgo and Tingmosgang. The conflict reached a stalemate until the Mughal Empire intervened in 1683.
Fidai Khan, son of the Kashmiri governor, defeated the Tibeto-Mongol forces, relieving the siege of Basgo and pushing them back to Lake Pangong. The Mughals, influencing Kashmir and Ladakh, imposed terms for their support. Ladakh's restoration to power required the construction of a mosque in Leh and the king's conversion to Islam. Though Kashmiri historians claim the Ladakhi king embraced Islam, local chronicles dispute this. The Ladakhis agreed to pay tribute to the Mughals in gratitude for their assistance.
The conflict concluded with the 1684 Treaty of Tingmosgang. Signed by the Ganden Phodrang Prime Minister and Ladakhi King, it delineated the Tibet-Ladakh border near Demchok and regulated trade and tribute exchanges. The Mughal intervention reshaped the geopolitical landscape, and the treaty marked the formal conclusion of hostilities between Tibet and Ladakh.
