The mild hybrid system includes a 48-volt lithium-ion polymer battery and a starter generator that is connected to the crankshaft by a belt drive. The starter generator combines the functions of an electric motor and an alternator. When accelerating, it supports the combustion engine, thereby reducing its engine load and emissions. When braking, driving downhill or coasting, it is used to generate electricity under certain conditions, thus ensuring highly efficient energy recovery. In addition, the mild hybrid system enables the combustion engine to be switched off for longer periods compared to 12-volt start-stop systems.

Electrification reduces the CO2 emissions of the top-of-the-line engine by around ten percent. The intelligent manual transmission also contributes to the high level of fuel efficiency. It has an electronically controlled clutch (“clutch-by-wire”), which can be actuated both by pedal and by an electronic control unit. If the driver takes his foot off the accelerator when coasting in front of an intersection or in other situations in which the combustion engine could be switched off, the iMT independently decouples the engine from the transmission. On the other hand, the six-speed gearbox displays the familiar characteristics and agility of a conventional manual gearbox in terms of operation.

The Stonic 1.0 T-GDi MHEV can “sail” both in the shifted version and with the optional seven-speed DCT. This switching off of the combustion engine while driving is possible at speeds of up to 125 kilometers per hour. As soon as the driver presses the gas, brake or clutch, the engine starts again automatically. In both transmission variants, the mild hybrid is equipped with the “Drive Mode Select” driving mode as standard (settings: Eco, Normal, Sport).

The internal combustion engine of the mild hybrid has also been optimized. The turbo petrol engine from the "Kappa" series, which is also available in a non-electrified 74 kW (100 hp) variant, now has CVVD valve control (Continuously Variable Valve Duration). This technology makes it possible to switch seamlessly between different combustion cycles, depending on the engine load, to ensure maximum efficiency in all driving situations. While the performance of both variants has remained unchanged, the more powerful 120 PS version has a clear plus in terms of power development: The DCT version of the 1.0 T-GDi MHEV now mobilizes a maximum torque of 200 Nm, 16 percent more than before. Kia has also revised the Stonic's third engine, the 1.2-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine with 62 kW (84 hp). Among other things, the entry-level engine was equipped with a dual-port injection system. In addition, automatic drivers now have more choice: the seven-speed DCT, which was previously reserved for the top engine, will in future also be offered for the 1.0 T-GDi, whose standard manual transmission now has six gears (previously five).

Infotainment has been a priority in the Stonic from the start. In the 2021 model year, the Kia crossover continues to grow here. The new, standard infotainment system has a larger touchscreen (20.2 cm or 8 inches, previously 17.8 cm or 7 inches) and can now also be connected wirelessly to a compatible smartphone via the Android Auto™ and Apple CarPlay™ interfaces associate. In addition, it enables Bluetooth multiple connections. This means that two mobile devices can be combined with the system at the same time, one for making calls using the hands-free system or for multimedia purposes, the other exclusively for multimedia use.
