The A-10 Warthog is legendary in air-power circles.
Manufactured in the 1970s and ’80s and upgraded in the 2000s, it was designed to engage Soviet armor in the open fields of Europe, with twin engines mounted high on the fuselage, a titanium cockpit, and a 30-millimeter cannon. The Warthog was built for low-altitude survival.

It never fought the war it was made for. But in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria, it carved out a legacy, strafing convoys, loitering for hours, taking hits and flying home.

Now, Ukraine faces exactly the kind of threat the A-10 was meant to counter: hundreds upon hundreds of Russian tanks.

And yet, the Warthog isn’t going.
But why?
