In my school days, I have heard many times my father reciting the poem, "The Charge of the Light Brigade " , by Lord Tennyson. The poem was included in the English syllabus in Intermediate Course at that time (1953-55). The poem is famous, popular and frequently quoted.

The poem is about the charge of the "Light Brigade" at the Battle of Balaclava which took place in 1854 during the Crimean War (1853-56). The Commander ordered some six hundred British soldiers, members of the "Light brigade" to charge the enemies "Cossack and Russian", who were heavily armed with artillery. The order of the Commander was a "blunder".The attack was disastrous and almost suicidal. But the soldiers without questioning the order, rode bravely on horseback into the "valley of Death". The British Cavalry with swords in their hands moved ahead facing bullets and cannon shells fired from different directions. The poet highlights how "all the world wondered" that they fought with swords against guns and cannons and witnessed this famous act of battlefield bravery.

The poem is one of my favourites. By listening to my father, I almost committed it to memory. A few lines specially touch my heart-
"Theirs not to make reply,
Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do and die.
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred."

In the book "DO & DIE - THE CHITTAGONG UPRISING : 1930-34" written by Manini Chatterjee, there is a reference that Lokenath Bal, a hero of the armed resistance movement led by Masterda Surjya Sen, which carried out the Chittagong armoury raid in 1930, recited a few lines from this poem before the night's action.
Ganesh Ghosh, who was another hero of the Chittagong armoury raid, wrote a poem "Chittagong Brigade" inspired by "The Charge of the Light Brigade" . A few lines are:
"When can their glory fade
O, the brave fight they gave
Honour the Chittagong brigade
The noble fifty-eight."
