During the years he was imprisoned from 1959 until 1964, Sonallah' used cigarette rolling papers as a diary to record his memoirs, as if he was using the very papers that scorched his lungs to put to paper the painful facts, questions, and alienation that kept his mind aflame.

Born in 1937, Sonallah Ibrahim is one of Egypt’s most influential writers and was part of the country’s “sixties generation” with his leftist and nationalist views.

His provocative social and political criticisms of Egyptian society had him jailed under the rule of president Gamal Abdel-Nasser in the 1960s.

In 2003, Ibrahim refused a prestigious state literary award for ethical reasons because of his opposition to then president Hosni Mubarak


في عام ١٩٣٧ ولد أحد أكثر الروائيين المصرين إثارة للجدل والتاثير بارائه السياسية اليسارية والقومية..

صنع الله ابراهيم الذي يعتبر أحد أهم أعمدة جيل الستينات في الحياة الأدبية المصرية نال الكثير من النقد والهجوم الاجتماعي والسياسي لما تبناه من اراء في كتاباته اتجاه قضايا مجتمعه..

وعلى ورق ألتبغ دون صنع الله مذكراته للسنوات الخمسة التي قضاها في السجن من 1959 حتي 1964 يكتب على ورق السكائر الذي يحرق رئتيه وقائع الألم والأسئلة والاغتراب الذي تشتعل برأسه.
