A former fortified city dating back to the 11th century, Peyreleau is an old walled village which was built on a promontory on the slopes of the Causse Noir, at the confluence of the Tarn and the Jonte rivers. Peyreleau, commune of Aveyron, but on the borders of of Lozère, in a preserved natural landscaped environment, opens with elegance and majesty the door of the gorges of these two rivers.

Peyreleau is located in the large classified site of the Tarn and Jonte gorges, the Grands Causses regional natural park and the territory of the Causses and Cévennes, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for the cultural landscape of agropastoralism.

Peyreleau faces the Lozérien village of Le Rozier, just at the end of the bridge that crosses the Jonte.

Archaeologists recognize "the Roman way" in the foundations of the old castle of Peyreleau (today the square tower) as well as the sections of walls hung on the rock of Capluc to regularize its roughness.

The Roman Occupation is attested by pottery, sections of walls, remnants of weapons, coins, various small objects discovered here and there. Some names of localities bear witness to the stay of the Romans. Maynial means fortress: there is a village of this name in the Jonte valley and another in that of the Tarn. It is the same for the old denominations of castri, later castle applied to Peyreleau.

In Peyreleau, you will be in a magnificent natural setting, made up of high cliffs, true natural monuments. The village is at the meeting point of three Causses Majeurs, the Causse Noir, the Causse Méjean and the Causse de Sauveterre separated by two spectacular canyons: the Gorges du Tarn and the Gorges de la Jonte. You can have access to picturesque walks in the middle of nature, and in particular the courses of the cornices which overhang the canyons and allow grandiose panoramic points of view.
