Ask May: I got promoted, then demoted! What can I do?

It can be really upsetting to be demoted through no fault of your own, due to a reorganization or reclassification in your company. Hopefully you can do something to change it but, even if you can't, you need to advocate for yourself and negotiate in a businesslike manner.

One of my subscribers recently wrote to me for help with this situation:

“They said I was promoted to a new higher level position. Then shortly after, the organization reclassified positions and my new role was classified at the same level as my prior role, although my pay increase remained.

My supervisor appeared to have been surprised by the recent change and was very sympathetic when they informed me, realizing this was a decision from higher-ups.

How should I address this with my supervisor and ask that I be restored to the level I was offered with the new job offer? “
