La chiesa della Santissima Trintà di Saccargia is one of the most famous Romanesque churches in Sardinia. Looking at these photos on Frà's blog for the first time, I was immediately captivated by its special atmosphere... this temple is not in the middle of a piazza, but rather in a simple meadow which, in fact, renders its structure more powerful, more picturesque.

Monteverdi's love madrigal "Interrotte speranze" (disappointed hopes) is about a lover's rejection, not religious contemplation... but it conveys, in my mind, the seeking of refuge from the torments of the world, a heartfelt plea for a renewal of hope... this quality is amplified by L'Arpeggiata's reverential treatment of the score.


Interrotte speranze, eterna fede,
fiamme e strali possenti in debil core;
nutrir sol di sospiri un fero ardore
e celare il suo mal quand'altri il vede:

seguir di vago e fuggitivo piede
l'orme rivolte a volontario errore;
perder del seme sparso e'l frutto e'l fiore
e la sperata al gran languir mercede;

far d'uno sguardo sol legge ai pensieri
e d'un casto voler freno al desìo,
e spender lacrimando i lustri interi:

questi ch'a voi, quasi gran fasci, invio,
donna crudel, d'aspri tormenti e fieri,
saranno i trofei vostri e'l rogo mio.

Disappointed hopes, eternal faith,
Flame and powerful arrows in a sensitive heart,
Fierce passion nourished with nothing but sighs,
And hiding its pain when it sees others.

Following the wandering and fugitive footprints,
Of the feet that are deliberately directed away.,
By scattering the seed, losing both fruit and flower,
And languishing after the hoped-for reward.

Letting a single glance rule one's thoughts,
And by a chaste act of will, submerging desire
And wasting all one's inner light in weeping --

Cruel lady, these are what I send to you by the armful:
Harsh and bitter torments, cruel lady;
These will be your trophies and my funeral pyre.
