This Racing Life: behind the scenes with David Simcock, Richard Phillips and Ashleigh Wicheard

We visit David Simcock in Newmarket and reflect on his years in the training ranks and how the landscape at the home of British Flat racing has changed in that time, in addition to memories of the trainer's brilliant five-time Group One winner Dream Ahead. He was joint-champion juvenile over a decade ago with a certain Frankel!

Richard Phillips has spent even longer in the training ranks and gave the first rides under rules to a young Charlie Hills - now top-class Flat trainer - as well as Welsh Grand National-winning jockey Adam Wedge. The son of a civil servant with no background in racing, Phillips recounts his memorable take of hoiw he first got an opening in the sport in order to get the experience needed to qualify for a course at Witney College that would get him into the industry proper. Phillips is a passionate advocate of the sport and the people in it and the trainer came up with the initial idea which blossomed into National Racehorse Week and explains more here.

We also meet Ashleigh Wicheard, last year's winning rider in the Magnolia Cup at Glorious Goodwood. She talks about her experiences in the industry as a young black woman, wider diversity in the sport and what she would change if she could have an ideal racing 'utopia'.
