I've made an ionocraft and attached it to my 50kV PSU, at first it didn't work at all and I started wondering why.
It seems negative charges (from the positive output) stick to the wood, attracting the positive charges on the tin foil strip, anchoring the ionocraft to the ground. This seems to be a recurrent problem, after checking other videos I could see most of them have used some kind of isolator (from plastic cups to styrofoam) to get rid of this problem.
Instead of using an isolator I added a tin foil mat, which drains this negative charges, the tin foil strip is no longer attracted and the ionocraft can take off without any other help.

You can see how the aluminum sheet get's charged and sticks to the wood forming wrinkles due the electrostatic forces.

This ionocraft has been built with raw spaghetti and tin foil, the dimensions are 20Cm at the sides, 3-4Cm for the tin foil strip and 10-12Cm for the lateral columns. The distance from the wire to the tin foil strip should be adjusted depending on the voltage.
