Several major ski resorts have been forced to suspend operations as avalanche danger surges to the highest possible level across vast stretches of the Alps.

As the avalanche death toll across Europe’s ski season climbs to 66 lives lost, authorities have issued the most chilling alert possible.

A maximum 5/5 danger warning - reserved for the most extreme and deadly mountain conditions - has been declared.

A Level 5/5 risk is almost never issued and signals what experts describe as an “exceptional” avalanche situation with “numerous very large and extremely large naturally triggered avalanches” expected.

Forecasters warn slopes are now so unstable that even a single skier could trigger a slide.

Entire ski domains have already been forced to shut with La Plagne and Les Arcs taking the drastic step of closing everything.
